Parish missionsThe Congregation of the Redemptorists was founded by St Alphonsus de Liguori in 1732 as a community of priests and laypersons who would be ready to deal with the immense poverty of people living in the countryside in the Kingdom of Napoli. The parish missions as a form of a weekly spiritual renewal of the parish including homilies, devotions and processions were very popular that time. After the arrival of the Redemptorists in Bohemia parish missions represented an essential part of the activities of the Congregation; so did they until 1950.
A mission team was established at the Mountain of Mother of God in 2002. In the course of forming the mission team, Dominik Duka O.P., the Bishop of Hradec Králové, helped very much. Fr Jiří Šindelář as a newly ordained priest came to the Mountain of Mother of God that time; Fr Krzysztof Strzelczyk, a Polish confrere, joined him after leaving Frýdek. So the basis of the mission community was laid. The composition of the team changed in the summer of 2003: Fr Strzelczyk turned to Frýdek, and Fr Tomasz Waściński came instead of him. Fr Josef Michalčík became the Superior of the Redemptorist Community at the Mountain of Mother of God in 2004. Fr Piotr Nowicki joined the community in 2006.
The parish missions represent a regular form of spiritual renewal in the parishes under Canonical Law. Typical Redemptorist parish missions last nine days, and according to tradition they have a special style which was formed by brilliant missionaries in the past. In accordance with this tradition, the parish missions prevalently consist of eschatological and catechetic homilies and diverse devotions. The goal of the parish missions is the annunciation of the exhortation to conversion and to acceptance of moral obligations for the life which result from the mentioned conversion.
