Retreats
The retreats represent a spiritual renewal which lasts more days and which is held in a group. The retreats are mostly led by a priest. The name ‘retreats’ has become known due to St Ignatius of Loyola who is the author of the book ‘The Spiritual Exercises’.
St Ignatius was born in Loyola in 1491; he was wounded in Pamplona in 1521. Because of his injury, he had been laid up for a long time which finally equalled his conversion. The book ‘The Spiritual Exercises’ describes his personal experience. He writes in the autobiography, ‘One day his eyes have opened a little bit: he has started to wonder, and to think about it. On the basis of his experience, he has learnt that some ideas result in sadness and other ideas lead to happiness in his heart. He has gradually become able to distinguish two spirits which writhe him: one originates from the evil, and another from God.’ In this way Ignatius discovered one of basic elements for his retreats.
There is a discussion about attractiveness of this form of spiritual renewal nowadays. For instance Pope Paul VI warned against formal and lazy repetition of the classical version of retreats. The person who leads the retreats should not be an excellent theologian only, but such a person who teaches the participant to know and understand his/her life, to distinguish the evil and the good thanks to the Holy Spirit, and to educate him/her about the joy of life according to the Gospel. At the Mountain of Mother of God the retreats take place either in the Redemptorist monastery or in the House of Pilgrimage. You can apply filling in the application form here.
